Topic: Towards truly distributed and smart manufacturing Pharmaceutical manufacturing is moving away from the “one-size-fits-all” model to utilise personal circumstances, medical history and needs in order to deliver individually suitable treatment. Current bulk manufacturing technologies are unable to meet most of these demands as they are slow in responding to changes, are capital intensive, use unsustainable methods and are not flexible to meet PM needs. In this brief introductory session, I would like to introduce approach towards ‘Factory in a Box’ platforms and how data, models and devices will facilitate next generation manufacturing in the coming years.
This will be followed by an invited talk on “Digitalizing Process Asset Performance: What, Why & How” by Dr Mothivel Mummudi of Tridiagonal Solutions.

There is a significant excitement about digitalisation, Industry 4.0 and their impact on manufacturing in process industries. It has a potential to become the most transformative era for chemical manufacturing (Industry 4.0: Top Challenges for Chemical Manufacturing, Elsevier White Paper, 2017). Digitalisation of process assets with the help of high-fidelity computational models is essential for realising this potential. However, development of computational models is only the first step towards it. It is essential to develop appropriate tools which will allow systematic digitalisation of process assets, derive new insights and synergistically evolve process understanding, key process metric and optimal process parameters for enhancing productivity.
