Dr. Marion McAfee MEng, PhD, FHEA, SMIEEE, graduated with a PhD in Process Monitoring and Control from Queen’s University Belfast (UK) in 2005 and is currently a Senior Lecturer in Systems and Control Engineering at the Institute of Technology Sligo (Ireland). She is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
Her research interests are in sensing, modelling, and control of complex systems with a particular focus on applications in manufacturing – particularly pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing. She is Co-Director IT Sligo’s Research Centre in Mathematical Modelling and Intelligent Systems for Health and Environment (MISHE) and is a Funded Investigator in I-Form, the SFI Research Centre for Advanced Manufacturing. She been a Principal Investigator in the field of systems and control research since 2005 and has been awarded research grants totalling over €5M awarded by the EPSRC, Royal Society, EU Framework Programme, SFI and Enterprise Ireland. She has led research projects involving sensorisation, modelling, analysis and control of processes in collaboration with research and industrial partners in Ireland, the UK, and across Europe. Her research has led to the implementation of various automation solutions involving sensor fusion, soft-sensing, system identification and machine learning, particularly in medical device ectors.
