Pharmaceutical Plant Cleaning
Cleaning is a critical process across many sectors in particular in the pharmaceutical industry where the cost and downtime involved in cleaning are substantial and regulatory requirements are paramount.
PMTC has a range of capabilities to support industry in addressing this challenge through experimental and modelling techniques we can help companies optimise cleaning across a given product portfolio mix taking account of the facility and equipment design.
Pharmaceutical cleaning and subsequent verification and validation have always been time consuming and a costly operation in multipurpose pharmaceutical plants.
Up to 50% of time is spent doing cleaning resulting in a significant impact on downtimes, costs and changeovers. Now with increased change over rates owing to smaller batch sizes and high potency products, pharmaceutical companies are actively looking for opportunities and appropriate infrastructures to help them optimising their cleaning protocols or developing new cleaning methodologies to reduce both time and cost of cleaning; whilst generating robust scientific data to support their cleaning procedures in front of regulatory agencies.
PMTC’s research approach to cleaning process understanding
- Computational fluid dynamic modelling: Quantify and prediction of cleaning rates by various cleaning methods and cleaning agents as a function of operating conditions
- Surface science: Surface properties (roughness, scratches, corrosion…), contaminants interactions with surfaces
- Chemistry of residues and cleaning agents: Computational and experimental methodologies to select the best cleaning agents (Organic solvents and their mixtures, aqueous solutions and detergents)
- Process analytical technology (PAT): exploring the best PAT solutions for real time monitoring and verification of cleaning process.
