Dr. Rabah Mouras
With a career spanning over 20 years across a variety of research roles, Rabah brings extensive experience to the role of Research Centre Manager.
Currently acting as Interim Centre Director.

Rabah holds a PhD in Physics “Optical Materials, Photonics and Systems” and his research interests are in the area of photonics focusing on the development and implementation of true non-contact, non-destructive metrological techniques based on optical micro-spectroscopies (UV, IR, Raman, Fluorescence, FTIR, CARS, SRS) for applications in materials and biosciences. These techniques have a wide appeal in (bio)nanotechnology, (bio)pharmaceutical manufacturing and biomedical devices, and continue to prove their usefulness as process analytical technologies (PAT).
Rabah is also interested in the use of novel computational modelling methods (COSMO-RS) to predict Physico-chemical properties (solubility, activity coefficient, partition coefficients log(P)) of solids and liquids.

Rabah is an experienced researcher in biophotonics, optical Instrumentation and true noncontact metrology with over 20 years of experience in the field. Throughout his career to date, he has conducted world-class research in collaboration with national and international scientists. He has also worked closely with industrial partners in both the medical devices and pharmaceutical manufacturing sectors and presently acts as a reviewer for scientific journals and funding organizations.
Rabah has extensive experience in leading and managing successful projects and attracting funding, having secured over €1.9M from different industrial and governmental sources to fund his research. In a recent innovation partnership programme (IPP) with a Multinational pharmaceutical company, his research output reduced their cleaning time by 35 % and the cost by 30%. Likewise, in another IPP in collaboration with a medical device multinational, he has developed a novel non-destructive technology to characterise Drug-eluting Stents (DES) and to quantify the dosage (concentration) and the polymorphisms of the coating.
Rabah has a proven track record of productivity and dissemination, resulting in the publication of 42 peer-reviewed papers, one book chapter and over 40 conference presentations including 10 orals and 3 invited talks. So far, his research output has over 904 citations and an h-index of 18.
In May 2022, Rabah was appointed to the role of Research Centre Manager.
Areas of Expertise:
- Real-time monitoring of manufacturing (bio)processes, cleaning validation and verification
- True noncontact characterisation of (bio)materials and nanomaterials
- Non-destructive characterisation of medical devices including drug-eluting stents
